I Saw It in the Cards

Over the last few weeks, I have made a lot of thread from plastic bags. While I enjoy this process, at some point I have to make things with this thread.

This weekend I added to my creative skill set by trying my hand at tablet weaving (also called inkle weaving or card weaving). This process appealed to me both because I could utilize my growing stash of thread and because I needed to invest zero dollars in equipment.

I made tablets/cards from a spare deck of cards. I could have just as easily used cereal boxes, plastic lids, or even thin cardboard. I copied the ‘loom’ set up from theloomybin.com and I followed some beginners instruction on threading the cards to make Chevron and Diamond patterns. Threading the cards without making a tangled mess was the hardest part of this small project.

Once I actually started weaving, this project went very fast. I’m pleased with my final product. My transition points seem a bit too taught and I need to address this in the future. . . But or a newbie, it’s not bad.

And shifting gears. . .

This coming Saturday, I will be demonstrating how to use my spinning wheel to make plastic bag thread and demonstrating how to make friendship bracelets from said thread in the Northern Arts Council booth at the Ferguson Farmers’ Market from 9am to 11am. Come visit me. I’ll let you play with my toys.
